Subjects include two naval scenes : Admiral Beatty with the H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth in the background, from a series "Germans ships surrender," 1919, and Admiral Sims from the German Ships Surrender series, 1918 November 21. "The D.S.C." consists of two vignettes on a single sheet. The larger depicts a U.S. soldier wearing the award against a background of troops advancing through a village. A smaller one titled "The watch on the Rhine" depicts a seated soldier with gun in the foreground and the [Rhine] and a [German?] town in the background.

Admiral of the Fleet David Richard Beatty, (17 January 1871 - 11 March 1936) was an admiral in the Royal Navy. He commanded the British battlecruisers at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. Later in the war he was Commander in Chief of the Grand Fleet, in which capacity he received the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet at the end of hostilities, and then in the 1920s he served a lengthy term as First Sea Lord (head of the Royal Navy).
